Despite having no clue as to what particular boat the earthquake has raised to the surface, any mention of PT boats starts journalists chattering about JFK in almost Pavlovian response.
Amazing how many tales of Kennedy heroism involve wrecking your vehicle and swimming for help.

Heh. I don't know if JFK was driving the PT109 at the time. At least he saw his surviving men to safety. The news story is a little inaccurate. While Guadalcanal was the scene of much fighting, so were many of the islands around it. The seas around Guadalcanal were called "Iron Bottom Bay" because of the number of ships sunk during the sea battles. Be interesting to find out more about this PT boat and how it got there.
Help?
He swam to sleep it off and consult his attorney!
Well, I HAD a comment, until Papa roached it first.
Oh, well, when in Rome!
HAAAAAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

Back in about 1999, a retired Martha's Vineyard detective wrote a long article for either Harper's or the Atlantic Monthly (as I recall) about the incident.
Through a combination of forensic and circumstantial evidence, he argued that
1. Ted Kennedy was not driving; rather, Mary Jo Kopechne was sent off in his car to drive to her hotel -- tired, drunk, and on unfamiliar roads.
2. She took the wrong turn and went in the drink.
3. Kennedy found out early next morning, called for legal help, and the family cover-up went into motion.
His version of events does not seem to have been followed up. There was no autopsy, the Kopechne family was paid a big settlement, etc. So there it sits.
...yet the media suspiciously fail to mention Kennedy in any news item involving "bay" and/or "pigs." I suspect a conspiracy is afoot.
Have I told you lately you are my idol? Great post - thanks for the evil giggle.
I suspect because the journalists don't know much history is why they can only think of JFK when they think of PT boats. I recommend a book called "The Mosquito Fleet" by Bern Keating for more information on these amazing boats and their heroic crews.
