Ben at Kick Him, Honey linked to a fascinating piece about a photographer who has done an art book entitled Alter Ego: Avatars and their Creators, full of photographs of real people and their online gaming avatars, complete with short interviews with each subject about how they chose that avatar.
That'd make an interesting read.

Nothing wrong with a little fantasy, I guess, but if more folks would concentrate on controlling their first life, they might not need to create a second one. Excepting that little Stephen Hawking of course.
If I was going to have an avatar, though, it would be invisible; that'd be awesome right there.

My avatar looks exactly like me, down to the hat, vest, and bald head.
In college once I saw a guy playing WoW before class started. I asked him why his avatar was female; he replied that he didn't want to look at a guy's ass all day.
