It has begun!

Lock and load! The undead uprising, the shambling horror, the Zombocalypse, is underway! Vampire bats have gone off the reservation in Venezuela...

(The second best CNN headline today? "Snake slithers into weatherman's pants." Which is the reverse of how it usually occurs, as everyone knows...)

When I worked in the jungles in Venezula and out on to the gulf of Paria, Rabies was standard requirements. Lots of shots and you had to take them just so.

Rabies is actually a perennial problem in a lot of the Third World, where human/wildlife interfaces are so much more common.

Doubly so in places with vampire bat populations. Bats as an order of mammals aren't actually all that rabid, it's just the few species that have big communal roosts in caves that tend to spread it around- and so far as I know, that includes the vampires. They spread it to each other, then their prey.

Am I the only one that thinks it's cool living in a world with vampire bats? Of course, I don't have to deal with them...

Okay, so vampire bats have rabbis. Come on folks, they've got enough problems because of that whole Dracula thing without us bringing up their religious differences. I mean, seriously, if we can't learn to look past...

Oh! Rabies. Never mind.
